Health, well-being and lifestyle

  • On top of the world

Having worked in the NHS, Social Services and now as a yoga teacher and complementary health practitioner I have thought much about the nature of health and health care in its various forms.

the difficulties in quantifying health

I am interested in the scientific analysis of health and fitness when quantitative scientific evidence is available. Equally though I am interested in qualitative and anecdotal descriptions of health which at times is the only evidence available.

Expanded ideas of measurement and analysis are increasingly being used to describe health and to illustrate the efficacy (or not) of health practices . This reflects the fact that some aspects of the human condition cannot be easily measured by the techniques of reductionist science.

Some of my particular areas of interest are:

  • The history of health care
  • The role of the mind in health
  • Meditation and health
  • The effects of stress on health
  • Philosophy of holistic health
  • Preventative healthcare
  • Anatomy, physiology and biomechanics
  • Varying approaches to back care, especially yoga
